Public Education
Public Education at the ORCC can consist of many different types of work such as staffing an information table at a school or community fairs, giving presentations on sexual assault to groups, publicizing our services, organizing events to raise money for the Centre, organizing and maintaining the resource library, working on our web page, etc.
We ask for a
minimum one year commitment to the Centre with approximately 5 hours of volunteer work every two weeks. You are expected to attend bi-monthly volunteer meetings. There is a fee of $20.00 for training materials. This fee is non-refundable.
We offer women an excellent training program and a supportive and fun environment to learn in. A variety of learning tools are used including group activities, role-plays, independent reading, and group discussions. In the sessions the following topics are discussed: Different types of sexual violence, its impact on survivors, different oppressions, public education and its role at the ORCC, how to handle disclosures, and how to deliver presentations and facilitate discussions.
If you are committed to ending sexual violence; and experienced or interested in marketing, public relations, event organizing, public education, communications, then call to make an appointment for a screening interview. If successful, the next step will be to participate in 22 hour- four session training. The first two sessions are two full-days usually a Saturday and a Sunday and two evenings of 3 hour each session to conclude the training.
