Friends of the Ottawa Rape Crisis Centre:

As you may know, the Ottawa Rape Crisis Centre (ORCC) has been educating communities, providing crisis intervention, long term and group counselling to women victims  of sexual assault for over 36 years.

What you may not know is that eight women are sexually assaulted each day in the city of Ottawa. You may also not know that sexual assault continues to be the most underreported crime in Canada; and that sexual assault is a serious social problem that affects not only women but our community at large.

There is a great deal of shame, secrecy and false information associated with sexual assault. No woman or girl wakes up in the morning and says, “gee, I hope I get raped today”. Yet it is the only crime where the victim is held responsible for the crime.  She  may have been sexually assaulted at her first university campus party, or a friend’s home or while waiting for the bus at the bus station. These are the women who come to the ORCC.

The majority of assaults are committed by someone known to the victim, usually a trusted friend, an acquaintance, a co-worker or a family member.

Here are some of the ways that you can make a contribution to ending sexual violence in our communities:

  • $61.50 will provide sexual assault prevention materials for 30 high school children;
  • $100 will cover the cost of an hour of individual crisis intervention for a woman;
  • $240 will help us operate the 24-hour crisis line for one day.

During this holiday season when you may be thinking of giving gifts to friends and family, consider giving to the ORCC in the name of a loved one.

Please make your cheque out to the “Ottawa Rape Crisis Centre”, or simply make a donation through CanadaHelps.org.

Thank you so much for your support and dedication to ending sexual violence. Have a safe and happy holiday, and all the best to you and your family in the New Year.
