Long-term Counselling

At ORCC we offer one-to-one, longer-term counselling that is free of charge. Longer-term counselling generally lasts for 42 sessions and are completed within a year. Each session lasts for one hour and takes place at ORCC. Longer-term counselling allows for a client to explore more deeply the impacts of sexual violence on her life while working with an experienced sexual violence counsellor.

What to Expect in Longer-term Counselling

When you first begin counselling at ORCC, your counsellor will do an assessment with you to find out what your needs and concerns are. An assessment is also done to decide whether ORCC is the most appropriate service to meet those needs. The primary focus of you and the counsellor’s work together will be to understand the effects of your experience of sexual violence (both recent and/or past) and to help you to find ways to manage the feelings that result. Together you and your counsellor will try to generate ideas about how to cope more effectively with daily situations. You will have a chance to set goals for yourself regarding what you want to achieve through the counselling process.

Your goals will be revisited during counselling to ensure they are still what you wish to focus on and that they fall under the mandate of ORCC (i.e. to provide counseling to help to resolve the after-effects of sexual violence). The process of revisiting your goals will help to determine the length of the counselling you receive here. In some cases, issues may be effectively resolved over a couple of months of weekly sessions. In other cases, longer term counselling may be needed.

Ending counselling with someone you have come to trust can be hard. Your counsellor will help to prepare you to wind down the counselling process, so that coming to the end of your counselling at the ORCC and getting ready to move on in your life can be a positive experience for you.

We encourage all clients to provide feedback on the counselling process to their counsellors throughout their work together. When counselling is finished we encourage you to complete the client evaluation form.
